Shannon Kaye has been providing custom artwork, color palettes, design consulting and textile-based goods for the home environment for more than 15 years. After studying at the Academy of Art in San Francisco and an apprenticeship with Page Kelleher in Ross, California, she started Shannon Kaye Finishing Touches in 1999 to offer her decorative painting and color consulting services to an impressive list of residential and commercial clients, such as Pottery Barn Kids catalog and Carlos Santana’s Sound Management. DIY Network, a leading national cable tv channel, soon took notice and selected Shannon to host Fresh Coat, a makeover show focused on painting projects and color to transform rooms. The show lasted three seasons and ran for more than five years. She authored a book by the same name and made several special appearances on channels such as Lifetime, TBS, and HGTV.
Several major labels, such as Benjamin Moore and Armstrong Ceilings called on Shannon for marketing projects that featured her painting techniques and easy on-camera presence. She became the spokesperson for Shur-Line painting tools enjoying roles in nationwide tv commercials, home improvement store signage, and of course, creative marketing projects from makeover prizes for sweepstakes winners to video series’ featuring her color and design tips for the Do-It-Yourself audience.
In 2011, DIY Network expanded their relationship with Shannon hiring her to produce, write, design and art direct a series of ‘how-to’ videos, for their website and social media channels, with paint projects specifically designed for the home. Her ‘XO staircase’ design remains one of the most popular projects on DIY Network’s site. She enjoyed working on both sides of the camera as she added labels like CertaPro Painters and Kelly-Moore paints to her client list. She also expanded her residential color consulting services to include major commercial projects from choosing color palettes for paint color brochures to writing advice articles and choosing exterior and interior paint colors for multi-unit residential developments. Her favorite color project her development and curatorial color palette role for the San Francisco Exteriors Color Collection brochure for Certa Pro Painters, which included inspirational color palettes from some of Shannon’s favorite neighborhoods. The project led to much more as Shannon was then tasked with developing a nation-wide theory training course for the franchise owners and regional trainers for this, the largest paint franchise company in the country and Canada.
Her art has expanded to gallery shows featuring her text-based ‘Stories’ art and this year, Shannon will launch the newest in a series of workshops called HUE, where she shares her approach to choosing beautiful colors at home. She is constantly involved in color consulting projects and expanding her Plein Heir label, which is a line of pillows, napkins and furnishings created from her paintings. Her signature motifs such as ‘Good Fortune’, ‘Torn Landscape’, ‘Wallpaper Florals’ and ‘Stories’ reflect her intimate relationship to color and deep passion for living beautifully at home.
Last year, Shannon hosted a lifestyle show for Southern Living magazine on Net2TV’s smart channel, Portico TV, reaching over 25 million people per week. She also completed her second video series with Kelly-Moore paints leading the project, as usuall, from both sides of the camera. She’s featured regularly in national print and online publications for her Plein Heir home goods and expert color advice.
