It is a choice we artists make, that is not too unlike love, where we find ourselves venturing into a realm of total vulnerability. - Kirk Wassell

Join uBe Art this Friday, May 6th 6-9PM for the Opening Reception of In My Absence - an exhibition of 46 amazing portraits

Sweatersack by Cassandra Cofield

Attempting to cover up what feels awful--the feelings of being small, weird, uncomfortable, and out of place that everyone has-- is something I have experienced and yearned for since I was a small child and I feel an overwhelming urge to communicate.

Finished With Formality by Tina Erickson

I collect vintage found photos. I find these castoff images at flea markets, antique stores and yard sales. I have a growing collection of odd souls that speak to me. I chase memories, even when they are not my own. In the process, what had been left to dust and dislocation is reanimated, resulting in new and obscure portraits of curious strangers.

Artfully Blended by Evelynn Aponte

Through painting and embroidery, I explore feelings of physical and emotional distance from my family. I paint family members and combine with embroideries of brand name food products that link me to them.Using products widely available, I decrease the distance I feel. I utilize food imagery because food it is a necessity that brings people together and is a reflection of my cultural identities. The physical act of embroidery makes me feel more connected to my paintings and the people portrayed. Needlework is a part of me--it's something I learned from my mother, who learned it from her mother.

Let's Take This Outside by Preston Craig

Painting and drawing allows me freedom to paint what I feel, not necessarily what I see. I decided to paint what I saw in my mind's eye while referencing what I experienced around me. A bearded gent, donned in cowboy attire, stares out at the viewer, his left hand clenched in anticipation of a possible confrontation.
