Hannah Freeman: a desire to illuminate

Meet Hanna Freeman - today's Drive-by interview featured artist.

What do you strive to communicate in your work?

In my paintings, I reflect the values and struggles of our society, from our obsession with man-made products to our limited natural resources. By carefully selecting and strategically arranging manufactured and natural objects in my painting set-ups, I create unique compositions that illuminate the consequences of our consumption. I want viewers of my paintings to be reminded that our own actions and decisions can greatly effect and transform everything that surrounds our existence.

What do you think is the function of art in society? Do art or artists have a responsibility to do anything in particular? My responsibility as an artist is to shed light on things that people would not normally be exposed to; to make them ponder their relationship and interaction with the subject and concepts presented in the painting, long after viewing the work. I believe this is a function of art in society, as well as to provide a safe way for people to talk about issues in our culture – especially challenging and/or controversial topics.

What are you presently inspired by? Nature – fungi, forest undergrowth, sunsets, water, the list goes on . . .

What words to live by inspire you? Trust in the Lord with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding. Seek His will in all you do, and He will direct your paths. Proverbs 3:5-6 NLT

Who taught you the most about art? Chris Kahler, Bruno David Gallery, St. Louis, MO What does creating art provide for you? Pure happiness.

You can check out Hannah's work on exhibit now thru Oct 29th in our Still Life exhibition featuring 39 works from across the country.
