Meet artist Matt Paskiet in today's Drive-by Interview.
What are you presently inspired by? I am presently inspired by the progression of time; the concept of the “now”, and the age old question of how we capture it.
Is there something you are currently working on, or are excited about starting? I’m very excited about a project I just completed for Mercy Health. I created several hundred glass birds that I installed in the atrium of the new Mercy Health Perrysburg Cancer Center. Several different colors were used to represent various types of cancer support ribbons.
Other than your art practice what other work do you do? Outside of my work, I spend my time taking care of my family; raising two kids alongside my wife. Words to live by . . . a favorite quote or motto? “Treat people the way you want to be treated.” and “If you’re on time, you’re late” Have you had to make sacrifices in order to live your life as an artist? At the age of 30, I started over to begin my life as an artist.
Do you encounter misconceptions about being an artist? Some think that artists just sit around all day playing with crayons, so to speak. There is a lot more that goes in to being an artist. It is my full time job and takes a lot of hard work and dedication.
What do you think is the function of art in society? Do art or artists have a responsibility to do anything in particular? Artists deepen the mystery. Only to be true to themselves as needed.
In an imaginary world where your artwork could speak, what would it say? “I love being here. I love having an impact on people’s everyday lives.”
Who taught you the most about art? I learn a lot about art from working and interacting with my peers.
Describe a quality have you retained since childhood? Curiosity and wonder
Who do you strive to be for those around you? Provider, Inspiration, worth looking up to
What simple pleasure brings you the most joy? Sleep
What is your greatest strength? Ability to be a catalyst in a group, creating synergy.
What about yourself challenges you the most? My lack of a filter at times
What does creating art provide for you? Financial stability, creative outlet, ability to share my talents.
